DIY Lemon Sea Salt Scrub

Hello guys, so i would be sharing my very first DIY recipe on the blog today which is the Lemon Sea Salt Scrub. But firstly, lets do a little background on the whole concept of using body scrubs. Scrubs are used to exfoiliate the skin, and by exfoliate I means to get rid of dead skin to reveal new ones. The skin regenerates every day, new cells form and sometimes we need to intervene in order to get our fresh new skin out. The importance of exfoliation cannot be overemphasized especially in this city of Lagos where I live. Going about your day to day, stress, poor diet, dirt, sun exposure, pollutants, dust etc etc can frustrate your God given beautiful skin and you might not truly see the potential your skin has if you do not take extra care of it. Exfoliating is just one of the measures you take to ensure a beautiful, healthy skin. It is advised to exfoliate two to three times a week.

The scrub I’m going to be showing you today can be made with ingredients you find in the kitchen and I make it myself everytime. I got introduced to it by my sister but being the skin care junkie that I am, I continued to use it even when she lost interest because really, it takes some concious effort to stick to a routine especially when you have to make it yourself. I have been using it for almost two years and has been my constant go to for full body exfoliation. I took pictures as I made some to exfoliate last night and I’m going to be giving you a run through the step by step procedure.

INGREDIENTS

While making a home made scrub, there are three components that make it all up- Exfoliant, Liquid and Add ins.

First thing you need is some sea salt.. (Exfoliant)image

Sea salt contains larger crystals than the normal table salt and this makes it a wonderful exfoliant infact you need to be extra careful so you dont hurt yourself while exfoliating. Sea salts contains sulphur which helps in cleansing and treating of skin conditions such as dermatitis and acne scars. Exfoliation with sea salts helps to remove dead skin particles, tones up the skin tissues, encourages peripheral blood circulation and helps in skin renewal.

Next is the Liquid option which is Olive Oil image

Olive oil contains three major antioxidants: vitamin E, polyphenols and phytosterols which protect the skin from premature aging and prevent skin damage. It provides a cleansing effect and doesn’t clog pores. When combined with sea salt, it leaves skin looking renewed and glowing.

Next ingredient is Lemon which in this can act as both add in and exfoliant.

The benefits of lemon on the skin are endless! Wherever skin care is mentioned you should expect the word lemon to appear. One word, Vitamin C!! We all know it is a great antioxidant and also boosts collagen production. Lemons are rich in Vitamin C and Citric acid so they help brighten and lighten skin over time. This means they can help lighten dark marks on the skin.

Last but not least, the next add in which is a dash of Tumeric powder.image

Tumeric is rich in curcumin which is packed with numerous antioxidants as well as antibacterial properties. It helps to heal acne and also lighten pigmentation and stretch marks. It also helps control oily skin and makes the skin glow keeping the skin looking young and fresh.

Now that we have been introduced to the ingredients, all you need is your mixing spoon and a grater.

STEP TWO: Grate skin of lemon into the mixture. This is called the    Lemon zest

STEP FOUR: Cut lemon in half and squeeze the juice of one half into the mixture.image

STEP FOUR: Add 1/2 tbsp of tumeric. ( I added a little too much here so half is fine).image

STEP FIVE: Mix it all together to form a nice smooth consistency just like this.image

So, there it is! Your home made body scrub packed with goodness. I use it once a week because of the abrasive effect of sea salt and the skin staining effect of tumeric so I would advice you don’t use it more than twice a week. It might go on a little oily so you could scrub first before you shower to wash oily residue away from the skin and please  always wet skin first before scrubing. It can be used for both face and body. It leaves your skin soft, glowing and feeling like butter afterwards. It is my absolute favourite! I like to mix rose water and saffron and use as a toner after using this scrub for the perfect finish.

Go for a milder scrub on other days. I use Eden’s Apricot Scrub For Face and Body. Skin feels and smells like heaven after use. I use it every other day.image
